Information about the partnership

Mongolia regards Germany as an important partner within the European Union. The country’s economic development offers German companies a wide range of opportunities in the mining sector, particularly with regard to raw materials such as coal, copper, gold and rare earths, as well as in agriculture, transport and energy. The Partnering in Business with Germany programme promotes cooperation between German and Mongolian companies in these sectors. The programme helps Mongolian and German entrepreneurs to find cooperation partners and promote B2B contacts, and these collaboration often result in long-term international business partnerships.

Focus Areas and Cooperation Potentials of Mongolia

Mongolia’s wealth of raw materials makes it an interesting market. Mining is the most important economic sector and holds considerable untapped potential as only a fraction of the Mongolian territory has been explored thus far. Beyond mining, other sectors such as energy, transport and logistics are becoming increasingly attractive for providers of modern equipment. In order to diversify its economy, the government of Mongolia is driving forward the expansion of the manufacturing industry. It is seeking to increase the share of raw materials from mining and agriculture that it refines itself. The manufacturing sector is being dominated by food production, ahead of construction materials and textiles/clothing, with a focus on cashmere wool processing.

Mongolia’s foreign trade with other countries is growing strongly. German exports to Mongolia include in particular cars and machinery. In addition, there is great interest in mining equipment. Mongolia’s imports from Germany are dominated by food, chemicals and machinery. In addition, renewable energy is a promising sector for cooperation.

Business in Mongolia – Opportunities for German Companies

The Mongolian economy relies heavily on the export of raw materials. However, the country is planning to diversify its economy and upgrade its manufacturing sector. In particular, more raw materials are intended to be processed by domestic companies.

To fully utilise this potential, the transport and energy infrastructure is set to be expanded. In the long term, the energy sector is set to become less reliant on coal. Major projects are aimed at expanding green electricity capacities, among other things. This creates opportunities for German companies active in this area.

The transport infrastructure is to be expanded to improve regional connectivity, accommodate the growing trade in raw materials, optimise logistics, and facilitate connections with trading partners — a promising industry with ample opportunities for collaboration, including for German companies.

In 2024, Mongolia and Germany agreed a strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation in the raw materials, industry and technology sectors, including the field of renewable energies and sustainability. This opens up a wide range of opportunities for German companies. Thanks to political backing, German exports could increase in the future. Currently, cars, medicines and luxury foods dominate the supply structure. However, the potential for projects in the field of renewable energies is significant, offering considerable opportunities for the delivery of equipment in a country with abundant sunlight and wind power.

Industry Focus and Participant Profiles

Partnering in Business with Germany is open to executives from all sectors. The largest group of Mongolian executives taking part in the programme work in mining, the food and textile industries and in the construction sector. The services for participants from the sectors of green technologies, digital transformation and agriculture are currently being expanded.

The Mongolian alumni of Partnering in Business with Germany are organised in two associations, which are organising various events for their members. They have close contacts with German organisations and institutions in Mongolia. Events held jointly with the German-Mongolian Business Association promote bilateral cooperation between companies from both countries. There is close dialogue with the Vietnamese alumni association, with joint events being held regularly.
