Working to deepen economic relations with Kazakhstan

A networking event with around 60 Kazakh programme alumni in Astana on 24 September 2025 showed that the interest in business cooperation with Kazakhstan is growing continuously in Germany.

The participation of a high-ranking business delegation which accompanied Director-General Ralph Böhme and also attended the alumni meeting underlined the growing significance of the programme.

On the occasion of the event, the cooperation in the context of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme was extended by three years. Kazakhstan has been a partner country of the programme since 2007 and has made it possible for about 40 Kazakh business executives annually to participate in the programme. Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of National Economy Erlan Sagnaev and Ralph Böhme, Director-General responsible for external economic policy at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), signed the joint declaration of intent to continue the programme.

Mr Böhme emphasised that German companies are increasingly interested in Kazakhstan as a new target country for cooperation. Underlining the importance of the programme with Kazakhstan for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, he said: “Economic cooperation creates incentives for growth and lays the foundation for resilient, long-term partnerships in a global environment that is becoming more and more volatile. Especially in times when supply chains are interrupted and protectionist tendencies are increasing, the programme serves as a targeted measure to foster dialogue, cooperation and market access.”

The German side is particularly interested in the diversification of Kazakhstan’s economic portfolio and the target to become carbon-neutral by 2060. The resulting need for a technology switch was a central topic of the networking event. The Kazakh partner of Partnering in Business with Germany, the national business association Atameken, had invited senior experts in the fields of green technologies, export development and finances/investments to a panel discussion. The Kazakh business executives discussed challenges and opportunities of the transformation and the possibility of local promotion.

German-Kazakh business relations strengthen the transformation

Alexandr Pauk, programme alumnus and entrepreneur at Power & Automation Solutions LLP (PAS Group) from Aktau, highlighted the influence of German firms on the technology switch in Kazakh companies. PAS Group is engaged in a strategic alliance with BLM GmbH and Green Synergy in the context of a hybrid geothermal energy project. Mr Pauk said: “We see ourselves as a bridge between Kazakhstan and Germany. We help Kazakh enterprises to gain access to advanced German technologies in the field of green energy. “We are willing to share our experience […] with projects with projects in other regions of Kazakhstan in the field of green technologies.”

Matteco GmbH from Baden-Württemberg, a company that offers sustainable solutions for the construction industry, the skilled crafts and industry, is active in Kazakhstan in the field of the circular economy. CEO Bernd Krieg presented solutions for industry to recycle waste tyres and produce new, durable construction and insulation materials, i.e. to transform waste into recyclable materials. His firm works successfully together with enterprises not only in Kazakhstan, but also in other regions of Central Asia.

On the occasion of the German Business Day, Kazakh alumni met with a business delegation of the German-Eurasian Business Association (Deutsch-Eurasischer Wirtschaftsbund e.V.) in Almaty. 17 German companies from numerous sectors ranging from logistics to medical technology took advantage of this opportunity to establish contacts on the Kazakh market and engage in a dialogue with programme alumni. The subsequent event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce for Central Asia provided an opportunity for detailed discussion between German and Kazakh business representatives. Conclusion: the bilateral economic relations are significantly gaining momentum.
