Sustainable strategies in international business

In September, two regional events in Potsdam and North Hesse focussed on foreign trade. The goal of both one-day events organised by the chambers of commerce was to highlight potential for foreign business, communicate risk mitigation strategies, and highlight opportunities in global trade.

Potsdam Export Day: a focus on foreign trade

The Potsdam Export Day, organised by the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, took place on 11 September. The one-day event was aimed at companies from the Brandenburg region and promoted the internationalisation of companies in the capital region. Dr Christian Herzog, Managing Director of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce, emphasised the need for a rethink in light of geopolitical challenges such as customs issues, sanctions, and supply chain problems.

Several podium discussions offered current practical knowledge on foreign business, customs, sanctions, and supply chain law, and exclusive market insights from the bilateral chambers of commerce. Participants also received valuable ideas and concrete implementation tips for their international business.

Partnering in Business with Germany presented its programme at a workshop on foreign trade promotion and highlighted concrete benefits for German companies. The Business Development Centres Commit and Gisma, which have been contracted to manage the programme, provided insights into the practical implementation of the programme and presented examples of successful collaborations, including examples from the region. For example, the Ukrainian Razan Centre for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation concluded initial agreements with Otto Bock HealthCare Deutschland GmbH from Berlin during a company visit that was part of the programme. The collaboration includes the supply of prosthetic components and training courses for employees.

The event therefore offered more than just theory: it presented practical models, concrete advantages and success stories, and provided opportunities for networking with embassies, bilateral chambers of commerce and international stakeholders.

North Hesse Foreign Trade and Investment Day: “Globally successful trading in difficult times”

The 12th North Hesse Foreign Trade and Investment Day also focussed on global markets. It was organised by the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Commerce and the Foreign Trade Forum and focussed on economic and political risks and the diverse opportunities in international business, particularly in the diversification of sales markets. Expertise and close cooperation are decisive for success. The international market day offered an opportunity to explore ideas for cross-border business, exchange experiences, and establish regional and national contacts.

Partnering in Business with Germany presented itself at a fair stand and showed North Hesse companies the concrete opportunities opened up by the foreign trade promotion instrument. These include cooperation opportunities within the programme, which arise from targeted matchmaking between managers of foreign companies and German partners.

Dr Christian Nordhoff, International Team Leader at the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Commerce, concluded with a quote from Winston Churchill: “The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” He emphasised that the 12th North Hesse Foreign Trade Day impressively demonstrated the wealth of ideas and potential for international business in North Hesse. Especially in these turbulent times, new developments not only present challenges but also offer valuable opportunities to try out new things – like tapping into previously unknown markets.
