Strong together: Tunisia and Germany celebrate a decade of successful cooperation

In mid-May, two high-ranking events strengthened German-Tunisian cooperation: the 10th anniversary event of Partnering in Business with Germany and the 1st session of the steering committee to plan future activities in the context of the programme. The Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mining and Energy (MIME), Fatma Thabet Chiboub, and representatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), MIME and the Chamber of Commerce of Tunisia and 70 programme alumni celebrated the programme’s success in Tunis.

The representatives of the two Ministries, the German Ambassador Elisabeth Wolbers, the Managing Director of the Chamber of Commerce in Tunisia and the programme alumni agreed that the interest in cooperation between Germany and Tunisia is great. Deputy Director-General at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy Dr Dorothea Schütz affirmed the close and fruitful cooperation. She said: “Partnering in Business with Germany is an instrument to promote foreign trade and investment with the aim to help SMEs open up new markets in a targeted manner.”

The fact that Minister Fathma Thabet Chiboub attended the celebrations highlights the significance of the cooperation and the successes of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme since its launch in 2014. Around 190 participants have so far benefited from the programme – with much success, as was shown by the great positive feedback and the speeches.

“Business partnerships do not happen overnight”

Tunisia’s population is young and skilled. This is a good basis for the business relations with Germany and an enormous potential for German SMEs. Bilateral partnerships can help to introduce innovative technologies and sustainable solutions on the Tunisian market. This aspect was the focus of the panel, in which successful participants of the programme shared their experience and findings.

The success of Asma Koussani, co-founder of Sotagri Company and alumna of the programme in 2019, began when she took part in Partnering in Business with Germany. After more than five years of experience in working together with German firms, she said: “Business partnerships do not happen overnight; they require a great deal of work. You need to understand your partner’s needs and share a common vision. Be patient if you want to develop a stable partnership.” This approach has proved to be successful for her, as Sotagri Group is the official representative of Bavaria Düngemittel in Tunisia and abroad. Her advice based on her experience from B2B conversations at trade fairs in Germany: “Take care of your image, your brand, and your communication tools. You need to stand out from the crowd. First impressions matter – make sure you make a strong one in the first few minutes.“

According to Jörn Bousselmi, Managing Director of the Chamber of Commerce in Tunisia, Partnering in Business with Germany is a complementary, practice-oriented platform for Tunisian and German firms to initiate business relations. He said: “The programme faciliates the entry into the German market and offers prospects for long-term business relations thanks to numerous personal contacts. “In light of Tunisia’s geographical proximity to the European Union, there is still a lot of potential for bilateral cooperation – potential which can be tapped in the context of the programme together with the bilateral chamber of commerce in Tunisia.” He stressed this point by saying: “The Chamber of Commerce regards a closer link with the programme as useful so that we can also support enterprises in a targeted way after the initial contact phase.”

SMEs as a success factor

During the 1st session of the steering committee, both the Tunisian side and the German side took stock of the work done so far and discussed the next steps of their cooperation. They underlined the importance both of the programme for the external trade relations between the two countries and of SMEs for business cooperation, especially in the field of exports. Partnering in Business with Germany thus makes a specific contribution to attaining the objectives of the Tunisian government regarding the diversification and modernisation of the country’s economy. The programme is focused on sectors which are of interest both to the Tunisian and to the German economy. In this way, it enhances the prospects of successful economic cooperation between companies from the two countries.
