Strong in challenging times: partnerships to open up new markets

“Seizing opportunities in times of continuing crises”, “using Germany’s competitive edge of innovation” and “taking more risks” – these issues were discussed during the 3rd Foreign Trade Day of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) in the Haus der Deutschen Wirtschaft in Berlin on 28 October 2025.

At the event entitled New realities, new strategies: opportunities for German foreign trade in view of geopolitical tensions”, high-ranking representatives of government and business came together to discuss the prospects of Germany’s export-oriented companies. During the panels, it became clear that German enterprises are facing new challenges in light of international crises, growing protectionism and dependencies on critical materials – which make the promotion of foreign trade and investment even more important. Programmes such as Partnering in Business with Germany show how targeted international cooperation can contribute to strengthening SMEs.

The Partnering in Business with Germany programme presented itself at the Foreign Trade Day as a practice-oriented success story. Every year, the instrument funded by the Economic Affairs Ministry brings together around 1,000 well-prepared cooperation partners from 22 countries with German SMEs. This results in new business relations, the transfer of know-how and lasting partnerships on an equal footing.

In his presentation, Alexander Schmidt, founder and CEO of BABLE GmbH in Stuttgart, underlined how important this support is. In the context of the PG programme, he met with the entrepreneur Lorena Santana from Chile. Describing his experience with international cooperation, he said: “The greatest problem for small enterprises is the – physical and cultural – distance and the fact that we cannot afford to make mistakes. Especially in the current tense global situation, it is difficult to minimise risks. It is extremely helpful that the participants of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme are carefully selected and trained in advance. After all, business initiations work best face-to-face.”

Operating at the international level – benefiting at the local level

At the stand of Partnering in Business with Germany, a large number of entrepreneurs and representatives of established companies informed themselves about the numerous opportunities offered by the programme. In Africa, Latin America and Asia, the instrument provides regional and sector-specific access to new markets and helps German companies to demonstrate their ability to innovate at international level.

The Foreign Trade Day 2025 showed that those who seize opportunities, search for cooperation and promote innovation strengthen not only their own companies, but also Germany’s position in the global economy.
