Innovative solutions for a sustainable South African economy

In late August, 45 South African executives who had taken part in the Partnering in Business with Germany programme met in Cape Town with representatives from business associations, the Consulate General in Cape Town, the South African Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK South Africa), and Germany Trade & Invest. The focus was on promoting innovation and partnerships for a sustainable and digital future, and encouraging professional exchange and networking.

The networking event highlighted various initiatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) that aim to drive partnerships between Germany and South Africa and support business innovation. One example is the German-South African Energy Partnership, which develops sustainable solutions to support the transition to clean energy and serves as a platform for energy policy dialogue. Its goals include supporting the global energy transition, strengthening trade in carbon-free energy, driving technology exchange, and diversifying and decarbonising supply chains. This includes modernising the grid, expanding renewable energy, integrating it into the energy system, and improving energy efficiency. Both countries are working to position themselves as regional leaders in implementing the energy transition and to establish secure, environmentally friendly energy systems.

Jens Hauser, Head of the Competence Centre for Climate and Environment at AHK Southern Africa, underlined the importance of cooperation by highlighting concrete project examples. German and South African companies are working together in areas such as EV battery production, wind energy, mini-grids, and green hydrogen – sectors that also present opportunities for participants in Partnering in Business with Germany.

Musset Kupakuwana, a former programme participant and Operations Manager at FoNG SA (Pty) Ltd, a company specialising in sustainable technologies for processing organic waste without wastewater infrastructure or residual waste, illustrated these opportunities by signing a memorandum of understanding with a Germany-based partner in the biogas technology sector. The aim is to develop modular biogas plants for off-grid rural areas in Africa. “This programme has been a game-changer for me and FoNG SA – connecting us with like-minded innovators and giving us the tools to turn our sustainable energy vision into reality. The relationships and insights gained are already shaping how we bring biogas and waste-to-energy solutions to our communities,” Musset Kupakuwana summarised.

Digital Solutions for Services, Trade and Manufacturing

The BMWE’s Digital Hub Initiative promotes cooperation between start-ups, established companies, and research institutions to advance innovation and digitalisation “Made in Germany.” In recent years, several collaborations have emerged, including partnerships between the Digital Hub Health in Nuremberg and South African stakeholders. Jenny Tala, Director of GTAI Southern Africa, sees strong potential in areas such as e-commerce, mobile payments, healthtech and agritech.

This event took place as part of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme, which supports cooperation between German and South African companies in fields such as renewable energy, IT and digitalisation. “International partnerships increase the resilience of SMEs. This makes programmes like Partnering in Business with Germany so important,” said Jens Hauser.

South Africa is Germany’s most important trading partner on the African continent. Emerging sectors such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and green technologies are opening up further opportunities. Around 600 German companies are already active in South Africa. The country offers significant potential for the production and export of green hydrogen. Energy security is also becoming an increasingly important focus in German-South African cooperation. Consul General Tanja Werheit emphasised: “The Partnering in Business with Germany programme is an excellent platform for German and South African firms to develop new supply and procurement markets and thus to optimise value creation”.
