German-Mexican steering committee pleased with the way Partnering in Business with Germany is developing

The German-Mexican steering committee of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme convened in Mexico City on 25 February 2026. The focus of the meeting was on further developing the priorities and strengthening bilateral economic relations.

Representatives of the Mexican Ministry of Economy (SE), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), the German Embassy in Mexico and the Mexican-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CAMEXA) joined with programme alumni to look back on the activities of the last few years and discuss the future approach.

After the pandemic-related challenges, 2025 saw a return to the level of success enjoyed before the COVID-19 years. This was primarily due to a better matching of the participants and additional B2B possibilities in light of greater outreach in both countries. More than one third of the participating Mexican entrepreneurs signed a contract or a declaration of intent within six months of the end of the programme, and the conclusion of further contracts followed. With around 700 alumni, Mexico is one of the central partner countries of the programme. Johannes Hauser from the Mexican-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CAMEXA) points out the potential of the former participants of the programme. He said: “We in the bilateral chamber of commerce are interested in bringing the alumni of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme together with German enterprises in our network. This can result in further cooperation between German and Mexican firms.”

Strategic partnership

For German companies, Mexico is both a dynamic market and a gateway to Latin America. Around 2,000 German firms are active in Mexico, many of them with production facilities of their own. Programme priorities including mechanical engineering, digitalisation and, going forward, the healthcare sector offer manifold opportunities for cooperation. Mexican companies benefit from access to German expertise, innovative technologies and new sales markets. There is a lot of potential for joint projects, especially in the fields of Industrie 4.0, automation and the automotive supply industry.

Fernando Díaz Barrero, co-chair of the steering committee and director-general for productive development in the Mexican Ministry of Economy (SE), said: “Partnering in Business with Germany is one of the Ministry’s most successful SME programmes and sets the standard for good cooperation. The programme’s effectiveness makes a real difference – especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, which form the backbone of both economies.”

Dr Christian Forwick, co-chair of the steering committee and deputy director-general for general issues of foreign trade and investment, trade policy and Americas in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), said: “The focus of the programme on forward-looking sectors including Industrie 4.0 and digitalisation enhances the prospects of successful cooperation between German and Mexican companies.”

Success stories to the benefit of both sides

The programme has resulted in a number of successful partnerships: in the context of the programme, Erika Navarrete, commercial director of BOYCO Ingeniería, established contacts to the German specialist for industrial filtration systems Boll & Kirch (BOLLFILTER brand). Since then, her company has been importing the products from the German firm to Mexico and is now working together with another five German enterprises. Ms Navarrete said: “The first successful cooperation served as a reference and was extremely helpful to expand our business relations with German companies”.

Emilio Serrano from SEAmbiental has developed solar-powered wastewater treatment plants together with Wilo SE in Dortmund and is producing them together with Wilo México. The contact was established in the context of the programme and led to the conclusion of a contract over €500,000. Mr Serrano said: “Although Wilo is also present in Mexico, the cooperation is the result of the direct contact with the company’s headquarters in Germany.”

These examples demonstrate the added value of the programme: Mexican companies gain access to technologies and markets, and German SMEs win reliable partners in a strategically important environment. Germany is Mexico’s most important trading partner in the EU, and Mexico is Germany’s most important trading partner in Latin America. In geopolitically challenging times, Partnering in Business with Germany thus makes a specific contribution to diversifying, modernising and deepening German-Mexican economic relations.
