First steps in forging a partnership with Indonesia

In early July 2025, a delegation from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy travelled to Jakarta to discuss the specifics of implementing the Partnering in Business with Germany programme with new partner country Indonesia.

To this end, the delegation held intensive talks with the designated Indonesian partners, the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs (CMEA) in Indonesia and the national Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). The agenda also included a dialogue with the leadership of the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID).

The Indonesian partners were very well prepared. The programme is to be launched in short order to offer German companies the opportunity to work directly with Indonesian partners. The programme offers the Indonesian side the opportunity to further internationalise its SMEs and expand business cooperation with German companies. Ulrich Niemann, leader of the delegation and head of the division responsible for the programme at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, had the following to say: “We are glad to have gained Indonesia, with its globally important emerging economy, for our ‘Partnering in Business with Germany’ programme.”

Indonesia is a rising economic power with a great deal of potential for German companies. Germany is Indonesia’s leading trading partner in Europe. For the past two decades, the island nation’s economy has experienced annual growth of 5%, leading to great increases in prosperity. The raw materials and agricultural sectors are currently the country’s key growth drivers, and the expansion of industrial processing activities and growing demand for technological imports also open up a wide array of new opportunities for German companies.

Programme to start in 2025

An initial delegation of Indonesian entrepreneurs is set to travel to Germany to begin business talks before the end of the year. The delegation will be focused on the food and food technology industries.
