Conferences on cooperation with Africa in Kiel and Hanover

In June 2025, the Wirtschaftsförderung und Technologietransfer Schleswig-Holstein (WTSH), the chambers of commerce in northern Germany and the Africa Business Network (GTAI) hosted networking events for local SMEs in Kiel and Hanover. Partnering in Business with Germany took the opportunity to make the programme better known in this region.

Africa as a growth market for firms in northern Germany

Just like all other regions of the country, northern Germany sees a great potential for cooperation with Africa. According to GTAI, African markets provide attractive opportunities for German companies – both large firms and SMEs – due to their level of economic growth, the young population and the increasing regional integration. Companies in northern Germany are particularly interested in the logistics, mechanical engineering and production, environmental technologies and agritech sectors.

Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative of German Business (SAFRI) and Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, said: “Africa has an enormous potential for economic growth, but it is important that companies also produce on this continent rather than only extract and export raw materials.” He also underlined the role of Germany’s promotion of foreign trade and investment. “The Federal Republic of Germany’s instruments to promote foreign trade and investment can help German enterprises to expand their activities in Africa. For this purpose, however, they need to be better connected.”

The Partnering in Business with Germany programme is one of these instruments. It presented itself to companies from northern Germany in Hanover on the occasion of the Norddeutsche Wirtschaftskonferenz Afrika and in Kiel at the Africa networking event. The programme offers German firms targeted access to selected and reliable local business partners – a clear advantage for market entry and long-term cooperation. The events provided the opportunity for interested entrepreneurs from Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony to share experience and learn more about how the programme can provide specific support to German firms.

Strong networks for lasting partnerships

Small and medium-sized enterprises derive particularly great benefits from Federal Government initiatives, as they contribute to reducing risks and fostering stable business partnerships. Sascha Godemann, Director Trade Management Africa, Hapag Lloyd AG, underlines the importance of local cooperation. He said: “The crucial success factor for German companies that wish to invest in Africa or work together with African enterprises is intensive local partnerships. German companies cannot become successful in Africa unless they are willing to learn from each other and meet their partners on an equal footing. They need to engage in partnerships.”
