Basis laid for partnership with Kenya

From 13-14 October, a delegation headed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy travelled to Nairobi to discuss the beginning of bilateral cooperation under the Partnering in Business with Germany Programme.

At the heart of the trip were discussions with the Department for Trade of the Kenyan Ministry for Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), which will be the political entity responsible for managing Kenya’s contribution to the programme. Beyond the talks with the Department for Trade and potential implementing organisations, other relevant stakeholders such as the Germany Embassy, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Kenya (AHK Kenya), the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) were also involved in the discussions. The talks served to weigh the interests of both sides and to discuss questions of strategic importance such as target groups and sectors.

Potential for cooperation between Germany and Kenya under the Programme was identified in particular in sectors such as food and food technology, manufacturing, digitisation and IT services, logistics and transport, and infrastructure development.

All participants advocate a timely start to the programme and are optimistic about the outlook of their future cooperation. Ulrich Niemann, who is responsible for the Partnering in Business with Germany Programme at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, said that he was confident about the opportunities the cooperation with Kenya would create: “The programme can help open doors for further cooperation between companies from Germany and Kenya, especially for SMEs”.

Dynamic development of the Kenyan economy

Kenya is one of the most important sales markets in Subsaharan Africa and, as an investment location, plays a key role in regional sales structures in Eastern Africa. Its liberal investment and economic policies and its role as a trade hub for Eastern Africa allow Kenya easy access and expansion to other markets, especially in countries such as Tanzania, Uganda and other neighbouring states.

“Kenya serves as a regional hub for many German companies to supply other high-growth markets as well”. In addition, the Eastern African country is an excellent innovation centre for startups and IT service providers and offers good business opportunities for German companies” (source: gtai). This assessment by Dr Monika Erath, Delegate of German Industry in Nairobi, highlights the strategic importance of Kenya as an international business hub.

The Kenyan economy is one of the most diversified in all of Africa. The country’s economic strengths in agriculture, the industrial sector and services, provide a good basis for forging partnerships and attracting investment. The size, diversity and transparency and these sectors create a wide range of opportunities for new business development. More than 100 German companies are already doing business in Kenya; and the region holds the potential to unlock further investment and cooperation opportunities in the future.
