Economic relations between Germany and Vietnam continue to grow, defying a global trend

Six years after the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) entered into force, economic ties between Germany and Vietnam continue to expand despite Germany’s economic stagnation and a challenging global environment. Partnering in Business with Germany’s network meeting held on 12 March 2026 in HoChiMinh City offered an opportunity to take stock of the progress made thus far and to look ahead.

New partner countries boost diversification and resilience in Germany’s trade and investment

The Partnering in Business with Germany programme has provided a strategic impetus in recent months: Türkiye, Brazil, Colombia, Kenya and Indonesia have been added as five new partner countries. The aim is to facilitate access for German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to high-growth markets and to further advance the international diversification of trade and supply relationships. Malaysia is expected to complement the partner network in due course.

Successful cooperation: joint venture for green energy

A forward-looking project for carbon-free power generation in Egypt has been launched with the newly established joint venture between the German technology company Frenell and its Egyptian partner Solar Energy Solutions (SES). Based on the innovative solar technology of Frenell, the project, which was established in the context of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme, will not only lastingly shape the local energy supply, but also strengthen German-Egyptian economic cooperation.

Shaping the future: annual meeting of the Business Development Centres in Bonn

Making Partnering in Business with Germany even more effective and attractive for German companies was at the heart of the annual meeting of the Business Development Centres (BDC), held in Bonn on 4 and 5 February 2026. The aim was to strategically develop the programme as a tool for promoting foreign trade and to prepare it for the future, with a clear focus on delivering value for German businesses.

Partnering in Business with Germany at MEDICA 2025: high level of participation and strong international interest

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) presented the Partnering in Business with Germany programme at MEDICA in Düsseldorf from 17 to 20 November 2025. At the stand, visitors had the opportunity to inform themselves about the programme’s scope and objectives for structured business initiation with currently 22 partner countries.

Visit of Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Rouenhoff to Vietnam: meeting with programme alumni

Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Member of the German Bundestag Stefan Rouenhoff visited Vietnam together with a business delegation from 16 to 19 November 2025. The third session of the German-Vietnamese Joint Economic Committee, which took place in Hanoi on 17 November 2025, was one of the highlights of the visit.

50 years of German-Vietnamese relations: opportunities and prospects for the future

On 8 July 2025, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Palatinate held an anniversary event in Landau to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Vietnam and the manifold economic opportunities that exist between the two countries. The role of Partnering in Business with Germany in fostering business cooperation was highlighted at this event.

Networking, innovation and new business opportunities

The smarter E Europe, Europe’s largest alliance of exhibitions for the energy sector, used Partnering in Business with Germany to bring together international and German companies for long-term cooperation. Over the course of three days in early May 2025, the programme presented its diverse array of services for the German and global economy alike. Company leaders from Vietnam and Egypt were also able to use this opportunity to make targeted business contacts with German companies from the energy sector.

Cooperation between Vietnam and Germany extended

There is a long tradition of bilateral relations between Germany and Vietnam. Vietnam has also been an important partner country within the Partnering in Business with Germany programme since 2008. The continuation of this longstanding partnership has been confirmed by Helga Margarete Barth, the German ambassador to Vietnam, and Tran Quoc Phuonggm at the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), who have signed a Joint Declaration on the extension of the partnership programme until at least 2027.

Vietnam: Long-term business opportunities with Partnering in Business with Germany

Partnering in Business with Germany organised two networking events in Vietnam at the end of February. These events not only celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Germany, but also promoted an intensive exchange on sustainable business practices and ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) criteria as well as networking between German and Vietnamese companies.

On 4 July 2024, 80 entrepreneurs from the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam and from Germany took part in an online seminar to gain insights into the Vietnamese market and establish new business contacts in Vietnam and in Germany.

Climate action as a shared task: How Vietnamese participants of Partnering in Business with Germany are helping governments and companies meet their climate goals

From 8-10 March 2024, around 100 alumni of the Partnering in Business with Germany programme met with representatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the German business community for a networking event in Vietnam. The event, entitled “Shaping the future: Digital solutions towards climate neutrality”, provided Vietnamese entrepreneurs with a platform for exchange and opportunity to network with German businesses in Vietnam.
