50 years of German-Vietnamese relations: opportunities and prospects for the future

On 8 July 2025, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Palatinate held an anniversary event in Landau to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Vietnam and the manifold economic opportunities that exist between the two countries. The role of Partnering in Business with Germany in fostering business cooperation was highlighted at this event.

Attendees included representatives of the Vietnamese Embassy, the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Vietnam, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.  Also present were some 20 German companies from the chemical industry, machinery, viticulture, education and trade-fair design.  They provided insights into their activities in Vietnam so far or were on the lookout for potential cooperation with Vietnam.

A particular focus was placed on opening up new markets. The participants in the panel can see tremendous potential for cooperation with Vietnam, given that the country can boast dynamic growth, a young and motivated population and a high level of digitisation and of affinity for IT. The EVFTA concluded in 2020 facilitates trade by removing tariffs on originating products. Vietnam also benefits from the China plus One diversification strategy to showcase itself as an alternative to China, opening up promising opportunities for German companies.

Vietnam can offer a wide range of advantages. The country is an important sales and procurement market, offers opportunities for investment and acts as a gate to the ASEAN countries. Rapid average annual growth rates of 6%, high levels of investment in infrastructure and a government pursuing reforms make for a favourable investment environment. This is further strengthened by a population with growing purchasing power, high demand for energy, and a willingness to comply with sustainability standards (Green Growth Strategy).

Trusted partnerships and networks

Dr Nahida Amado from the International Chamber of Commerce for the Stuttgart region, a business development centre implementing Partnering in Business with Germany, highlighted the importance of trusted partnerships and well-functioning networks for any company seeking to be successful in Viet Nam. Peter Kompalla, Representative of German Industry in Viet Nam, stated very clearly: “For this reason, programmes such as Partnering in Business with Germany are so important for building successful business relations.”

The event made highlighted the fact that German-Vietnamese (business) relations are more dynamic and promising than ever. Viet Nam offers extraordinary potential for German companies seeking to widen their international business and benefiting from the strong growth rates found in South East Asia.
